BIKING

The Damascus area is a great place to be if you're a biker. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34-mile rail to trail that starts on Whitetop Mountain and runs all the way to Abingdon, VA. Downhill for the first 17 miles, the Creeper Trail is a great family activity that requires very little skill. The trail runs through the mountains and along Whitetop Laurel and Beaver Dam Creeks. It even crosses the Appalachian Trail a few miles before you get to Damascus! The scenery is incredible, and the busy seasons are usually in the summer and autumn.

Wanting something a little more challenging? There are hundreds of single tracks within a 100-mile radius of Damascus. The Iron Mountain Trail is a local favorite, and is about a 30 minute drive from Damascus. If you're willing to drive, Sugar Mountain also offers a great deal of mountain biking trails that wind through the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.

Like to stick to the roads more than the trails? The back roads in and around Damascus are perfect for road bikers. The TransAmerica Trail comes through town after winding its way along Whitetop Mountain. Take 58 East up into the mountain for a great climb that'll put you in shape in no time. You can also hop on Shady Avenue in Damascus and bike a few miles to Backbone Rock for some great scenery. If you're looking for a really great workout and don't mind the drive, Beech Mountain near Boone, North Carolina, provides one of the most intense climbs around, and comes complete with steep switchbacks and awesome views.
