With Whitetop Laurel, Beaver Dam Creek, and the Holston River running right through it, Damascus is a paddler's paradise. While it takes an ample amount of rain to get Whitetop and Beaver Dam to run, they are usually at decent levels through the fall and winter. Whitetop Laurel and Beaver Dam Creek are both great continuous class III creek runs and are a local favorite. The Holston River provides anything from a scenic, flatwater paddle, to a fun, class II/III whitewater run. Tubers, rafters, canoeists, and kayakers alike all hit up the Holston River when it's running.
Visiting during the dry, summer months? Not a problem, if you're willing to drive. The Nolichucky River is only about an hour away and provides a great place for experienced paddlers to go when there's no local water. The Nolichucky usually holds water year-round and is an exciting class III/IV gorge run. Not into gorges? The Holston Lake and the lakes in Hidden Valley and Beartree Campgrounds hold water year-round and are great for just getting out and doing some flatwater relaxin'.
