KAYAKING AND CANOEING

A clear sky is reflected on the calm waters of the New River.
Canoeing on the New River.

THE FLAT PADDLE
- Holston Lake, VA

Looking just to float downriver? The
Holston Lake is for you. Put in
at the Abingdon Winery off
Alvarado Road and float
through the scenic Middle Fork of
the Holston River, or go straight to the
Holston Lake and paddle around
there for a day. With decent parking,
boat ramps, and great scenery,
the Holston is a great place to
explore. The water holds pretty
much year-round, so even in the summer
when nothing else is running,
this paddle is a great way
just to get out on the water.

THE CLASS II/III
PADDLE

- South Fork of the Holston River, VA

Looking for something a little more exciting
than flat water? Conveniently located in
our backyard, the South Fork of the Holston
River provides a great beginner/intermediate
class II/III paddle. It usually holds water all
year round, but the summer can get
pretty dry. The minimum recommended
level is 300cfs, if you're trying to avoid
destroying your boat.
Check out American Whitewater
for level gauge and rapid descriptions.

THE CLASS III/IV
PADDLE
- Whitetop Laurel, VA

As a sweet, class III+
creek, Whitetop Laurel is
a favorite among locals. It's hard
to catch in the summertime, but
runs pretty consistently
in the fall and winter months.
The 12 miles of continuous class
III+ rapids offer experienced
paddlers something more
challenging and
exciting than the South Fork
of the Holston River.
Check out American Whitewater
for gauge levels on the South Fork.
Once the levels start
to shoot straight up, it's time
to load up and get on the
creek before the water
gets down to the
South Fork. Put in at Taylor's
Valley for a longer run or at
Straight Branch for a
quicker, low-water run.
