| Sandstone rock formations in Channels State Park. |
|
|
The Channels State Forest and Natural Area Preserve was established in 2008 to protect the surrounding natural communities of Washington and Russell counties. About 15 miles north of Abingdon, the state forest is situated in the Clinch Mountain range and is home to some very unique, eroded, sandstone crevices that are very popular among visitors.
THE HIKE
Looking for a great work out with even better rewards? Then this is definitely the hike for you. Park off Rt 689 between Hayter's Gap and Brumley Gap and hike up the steep, 5 mile trail to the Channels Natural Area Preserve. Once you see the old watch tower and the abandoned cabin, you're practically there! Continue on to the top and climb down into the crevices to go exploring!
Check out the Virginia Department of Forestry's brochure for more information on the park.
